Selenium (Se)

Selenium (Se) - A Grey Metalloid Element

Selenium (Se) is a grey or red metalloid element, with an atomic number 34 and atomic mass 78.96, of the sulfur group discovered in 1817 by Berzelius who named it after Selene, the Greek Goddess of the moon. It is widely used in many commercial applications, thus constituting a common source of human exposure.

Selenium - An Essential Trace Element

Selenium is an essential trace element, called the ‘protection mineral’ in humans, best known for its function as an antioxidant. It is fixed in the genetic code in contrary to other trace elements and minerals.

Since the classification of selenocysteine as the 21st amino acid in 1988, a number of other selenoproteins have been discovered and the importance of selenium in human physiology recognized.

Most selenoproteins have redox activities. Among the most widely found selenoproteins in mammals are deiodinases in the thyroid, Thioredoxin Reductase and Glutathione Peroxidase, a well recognized antioxidant enzyme.

100 µg and 500 µg Se Containing Solution For Oral and Injection

The selenium product of choice for biosyn has essentially been the inorganic selenium compound sodium selenite pentahydrate, as the source of selenium preparation. The initial dosage forms included the 100 µg and 500 µg Se containing solution for oral and injection. The active ingredient sodium selenite pentahydrate is manufactured in biosyn’s dedicated GMP facility in Germany, certified by the German authorities.
